Few things irritate me so much as the conservative tendency to draw the blank banner of optimism over all matters of substance as though it were a cloak.

Since the Economist article is for subscribers only, I have a question. How many men from the bottom quarter stayed in the bottom quarter? How many moved to the next quarter? How many men in the bottom quarter actually "worked hard and persevered"?

I do think hard work and perseverance will lift people but only to a point. Intelligence and education are needed as well.
