I think Cleland lost because of the gay/Boy Scout issue. Chambliss used fearmongering to great effect, homosexuality is a huge wedge issue in the Bible Belt, and even influences Democratic voters. I love how it's obvious that Bush was popular in the ad at the time (and playing to 9/11 fears worked for Republicans), it seems really naive right now. Chambliss is far ahead in his fundraising against his nearest challenger, I expect he'll waltz into reelection.
