Mr. Nyhan, do you believe that calls for troop withdrawal discourage our enemies in Iraq? Do such calls not affect our enemies in Iraq? I think it is perfectly reasonable that our enemies are encouraged by our talk to "redeploy." They want to stick around. There is always breathing room when your enemy is on the verge of giving up.

If you call that attacking dissent, then that's fine. They have a right to say that. Are you suggesting that they are calling for a law that would abridge the freedom of speech in this context?

Anyway, the non-Lieberman Democrats have a right to dissent from the President's proposals. However, such a right doesn't make the use of it in this situation wise. Defeatest speech is as helpful as yelling "fire" in a crowded theatre when there is no fire (except that speech is illegal, I believe, since it is not political and it causes only harm).
