Young Mr. Nyhan is fortunate to live in a country and time where "ugly racial history" can be asserted based on trivial acts or ambiguous symbolism.

Within my lifetime, black people were lynched because of their race. More recently, white-owned and Asian-owned stores were torched because of their owner's race. Within the last year, a half dozen black students beat up a white student simply because of his race. Today, in many countries, Islamic terrorists are killing and torturing infidels because of their religion.

Compared to these brutal acts, George Allen's flag collection and the other items mentioned seem to me like pretty minor racial history.

Niall Ferguson's soul just died a little.

But if we're doing counterfactual matchups, how about Hillary Clinton versus Richard Nixon? They're the same person! They're cold and calculating. They fight dirty. Despite how hard they try, they just can't seem to get people to like them. They think the world's out to get them. They envy, resent and can't understand the adulation their opponents receive. They wallow in self-pity. And nobody would buy a used car from either of them.
